Expedition Jungle

Overview

5-day/4 Nights jungle observation trek for a unique experience in the tropical rainforest. Delve deep into the jungle, staying overnight at various camps within the Gunung Leuser National Park. Your journey will take you to the Jambur Batu River, Landak River, and Bohorok River. As you hike up and down hills and cross small rivers, you'll learn traditional jungle survival skills. With some luck, you might even see spot a Sumatran tiger! This trek requires a high level of fitness and health, as you'll be trekking for several hours each day and carrying all your own equipment.

Day 1

  • 9:00 am : After breakfast, our guide will pick you up at your guesthouse.  

​

  • Morning : Walk down the river, go uphill, and cross rubber plantations on your way to the entrance of the Gunung Leuser National Park.  

​

  • Late Morning : Enter the jungle, with a chance to spot semi-wild Sumatran Orangutans. Spend time observing them in their natural habitat.  

​

  • Afternoon : Continue trekking through the rainforest and stop for a snack of tropical fruits. Hike for another hour to enjoy viewpoints overlooking the Bohorok River valley and Gunung Leuser National Park.

Day 2

  • Morning : Wake up and enjoy a homemade breakfast in the rainforest.

  • 9:00 am : Start trekking for about 3 hours, keeping an eye out for wildlife.  

​

  • Midday : Have lunch surrounded by jungle sounds.  

​

  • Afternoon : Trek for another 3 hours to your second campsite. Relax and take a swim in the river or waterfall.  

​

  • Evening : Enjoy a traditional dinner around the campfire while listening to jungle stories from our guide. Get some rest for the next day's trek.

Day 3

  • Morning : Wake up feeling like a true jungle adventurer and enjoy breakfast at the campsite.  

​

  • 9:00 am : Continue a 4 to 6-hour trek. Take breaks to spot wildlife, enjoy lunch, and eat tropical fruits. Look out for 8 species of monkeys and various birds.  

​

  • Afternoon : Walk to a new campsite, relax, and swim in the river.  

​

  • Evening : Have dinner around the campfire. You can either go to sleep or join a night trek to spot nocturnal species.

Day 4

  • Morning : After breakfast, go deeper into the rainforest, exploring rivers, creeks, and swimming in waterfalls.  

​

  • Midday : Enjoy lunch amidst the jungle atmosphere.  

​

  • Afternoon : Continue trekking, learning about the flora and medicinal plants. Reach your final campsite and set it up with your guides.  

​

  • Evening : Chill out with tea or coffee while waiting for dinner. You can join another night trek if you'd like. Enjoy your last night in the jungle.

Day 5

  • Morning : After breakfast, customize the trek distance and activities to your preferences.  

​

  • Midday : Have your last lunch in the jungle.  

​

  • Afternoon : End your trek with a refreshing and fun "jungle taxi" ride along the Bohorok River, returning to Bukit Lawang by traditional tubing. Our guide will bring you back to your guesthouse around 2 or 3pm.

Included

Certified English speaking guide, porter, fresh fruits, snack, lunch 5x, dinner 4x, breakfast 4x, all equipment (tent, roll mat, sleeping bag), drinking water, and rafting back after the trek.

Excludes

Permit entrance to the Gunung Leuser National Park, camera tax 10 Euros/ person for normal day and 13 Euros/ person in Sundays or red days, payable to the national park office).

What to bring

  • A small backpack with clothes, raincoat, swimwear, small towel, small pillow, personal items, toilet paper, medicines, camera + spare battery + memory card (in a waterproof bag), insect repellent, sunblock, torch, plastic bag (to put wet clothes in), sandals/ flip flops (to walk around the camp).

  • Please make sure your luggage is as light as possible.

  • You will be provided with a 1.5L bottle of water for each person, which the guide will refill at the camp with boiled water.

  • Clothing: long sleeves/trousers are optional as there are few mosquitos. Although nights can be cold in the jungle. Wearing something comfortable is most important.

  • Shoes: waterproof shoes with good grip/tread are essential for slippery paths.
